A global phenomenon returns to Vancouver
Renowned for its vibrant celebration of China's millennia-old culture, Shen Yun’s return to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre promises to delight audiences with its unique blend of classical Chinese dance, live orchestral music, vocal soloists, groundbreaking digital backdrops, and more.
Based in New York and founded in 2006 by a group of Chinese artists in the United States, the company has grown from one to eight equally sized touring groups, bringing the splendour of classical Chinese dance and music to the global stage.
"Our mission is clear. We're not just about entertainment. We aim to showcase the beauty and depth of traditional Chinese culture,” says team member Wandi Zhu.
“The costumes, the live orchestra blending Eastern and Western instruments, and the intricate dance pieces — all are crafted to give our audiences a profound cultural experience.”
An artistic experience that resonates
Shen Yun's performances are more than a display of artistic and dance excellence; they are a bridge to a rich cultural heritage. The show's unique animated backdrops and the seamless flow from scene to scene allow the audience to travel through time, experiencing stories of valour, beauty, and the enduring human spirit.
"The audience's response has been overwhelmingly positive," Zhu says.
"It's not just about watching a show – it's about feeling connected to something greater, something beautiful and profound. Our performances are full of moments that touch the heart and uplift the spirit."
Accessible art for all
Understanding the importance of accessibility, Shen Yun offers round-trip shuttle services for matinee shows from various locations, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience this cultural gem.
"We want to make it convenient for everyone to witness the spectacle of Shen Yun. It's a show that transcends cultural boundaries, offering a universal language of dance and music that everyone can appreciate," Zhu says.
A call to unity and understanding
Shen Yun will play seven shows at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver from March 20 to 25, offering a unique opportunity for individuals from all walks of life to unite in appreciation of a heritage that, while rooted in Chinese tradition, resonates universally.
"Dance and music are universal languages that everyone can appreciate, regardless of cultural background," Zhu says.
