What does it take to be a successful and innovative CEO?

That’s the question the Burnaby Board of Trade hopes to answer with its new CEO 1:1 series, which gets started April 15 with Jack Newton, CEO of Clio, a Burnaby tech company whose management software is used by law firms and legal professionals.

Newton will share his insights and personal experiences about growing his own business during a conversation with Global TV anchor Lynn Colliar.

All four installments of CEO 1:1 take place at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, 6083 McKay Ave., from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 for board of trade members and $60 for non-members. To register call 604-412-0100 or visit bbot.ca.

Lights off for Earth Hour

Metropolis at Metrotown is going dark.

The Burnaby shopping centre is turning off the façade lighting from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 in recognition of Earth Hour.

The mall has been making an effort to reduce its carbon footprint for several years, including changing the majority of its light bulbs to high efficiency LED light bulbs, noted a press release.

Burnaby biz gets big bucks

Burnaby-based Loop Energy was given a hefty investment from the federal government earlier this month.

The local clean tech company received $7.5 million as part of the government’s sustainable development technology tech fun and NextGen Biofuels fund.

Loop Energy, which was one of 36 clean tech companies across five provinces given a federal investment, has developed a zero-emission hydrogen and electric vehicle engine for heavy duty trucks.

“(Sustainable Development Technology Canada) is a real leader in vetting and supporting green technologies that will solve climate change. This award reflects their conviction that Loop’s zero-emission powertrain is a commercially competitive solution for heavy duty trucks, and that’s a huge validation for us,” said Ben Nyland, president of Loop Energy, in a press release.
