Looking for retail work this fall? Then the place to be is Metropolis at Metrotown this Saturday.

The shopping centre is holding a job fair from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with more than 30 retailers looking to fill more than 500 positions – part-time, full-time, entry level and managerial, according to a press release from Metropolis.

The job fair takes place in the Metropolis at Metrotown atrium and grand courts, according to the release. For a complete list of retailers involved in the job fair, click here.

 

Grand opening at BASES

A South Burnaby thrift store that helps low-income schools in the city is celebrating its grand opening this weekend after moving to a new location.

The BASES (Burnaby Association of South East Side) Family Thrift Store, which was previously located on Kingsway, is now at 7825 Edmonds St. The thrift store was recently featured in the NOW.

Proceeds raised by the non-profit fund programs at Edmonds-area schools, such as basketball, bike-repair and after-school snacks.

The grand opening takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a sale to kick things off.

Seminar next week

The Burnaby Board of Trade is holding seminar to help businesses navigate group benefits and insurance plans next week.

The seminar on group plans takes place Thursday, Oct. 1 from noon to 1 p.m., and is free for members. Tickets are $10 for non-members. A light lunch is included.

Burnaby Business Hall of Fame

Get ready for greatness, Valley Bakery.

The Heights bakery is being inducted into the Burnaby Business Hall of Fame on Oct. 8 at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown.

The annual induction luncheon takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $65 for Burnaby Board of Trade members, or $625 for a table of 10 members. Tickets for non-members are $85 or $825 for a table of 10.

Ron MacLean coming to Burnaby

One of the country’s best-known names in hockey is coming to Burnaby next month.

While it may not seem business related, Ron MacLean is appearing at a Burnaby book store – Chapters, at Metropolis at Metrotown.

The co-host of Coach’s Corner and host of Rogers Hometown Hockey is in town to share stories from his new book, Hockey Towns: Untold Stories from the Heart of Canada.

People who purchase the book from Indigo, Chapters or Coles can get one copy signed, so long as they have proof of purchase, according to Indigo Books and Music’s website.

The reading and signing event takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.

Board of Trade raises $10,000 for Burnaby Neighbourhood House

The Burnaby Board of Trade’s annual golf tournament helped out a local non-profit organization.

The event, which took place on Sept. 15, raised $10,000 for Burnaby Neighbourhood House – $5,000 from the players and a matching donation from Scotiabank, according to a press release from the board.

The popular event included 150 business owners, professionals and community leaders, according to the release, and took place at Riverway Golf Course.

 

City insurance broker one of the elite

A Burnaby insurance broker is one of the top brokers in the country, according to Insurance Business Canada.

Tony Thompson, senior account manager of national and international accounts for Hub International, was Number 22 out of 30 elite brokers listed in the industry magazine.

This is the third year the magazine has compiled the ranking, according to a press release.

The brokers are ranked across five criteria to ensure a balanced playing field, the release stated. The criteria include premium income, revenue per client, awards and recognition, how many policies they’ve written, and their client book.

Burnaby company donates $100,000 to autism centre

Pacific Blue Cross will have its own room at the Pacific Autism Family Centre when it opens.

The Burnaby-based company recently donated $100,000 to the Pacific Autism Family Centre Foundation, to go towards creating the Pacific Blue Cross preschool room, according to a press release from the foundation.

The centre is being built for children on the autism spectrum and their families, and will provide information and support, offer treatments and conduct research.

It is being built in Richmond and is scheduled to open next summer.

Choices celebrates

Choices Markets is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a year of prizes, according to an email from the Canadian company.

There will be weekly draws for 10,000 Choices points, which equals $100 in groceries, according to the Choices’ website. Those interested in entering can fill out a draw form at local stores, and each week a name will be drawn from each store location until the middle of November.

Those winners will then be invited to the store, and four winners from each location will win a $250 Choices gift card as well as a ballot for a grand prize of $25,000.

There are two Choices locations in Burnaby – one at 10th Avenue at Crest Plaza, and the new production facility and smaller store at New Haven Business Park at Glenlyon Parkway and Marine Way.

 

Dave Matthews ‘digs’ local farm

The Dave Matthews band performed at Rogers Arena at the end of August, and when they did, they ordered their food from Burnaby.

Chefs for the band and crew ordered meat and produce from Urban Digs Farm, according to a press release from Urban Digs.

“We are big fans of The Dave Matthews Band so it was a real thrill to get the call,” Julia Smith, co-owner of the farm, said in a press release. “Along with a great selection of organic fruits and veggies, we’re sending some beautiful dry-aged heritage pork chops that were pasture-raised less than 10 miles away from Rogers Arena and you can’t get any more local than that.” 

Matthews is involved with Farm Aid, which holds annual concerts to raise funds for family farms in the U.S.
