Some of Vancouver’s top competitive artists will be featured in a new exhibition at Deer Lake Gallery this summer.
DiverCity, set to run from July 8 to Aug. 5, features works by the artists who will be participating in the Burnaby Arts Council’s second annual Park’s Edge Paint Off – which takes place on July 8 as part of the Deer Lake Summer Arts Festival.
DiverCity is an exhibition that celebrates ethnicity, gender, age, national original, disability, sexual orientation, education and religion in a diverse society.
Featured artists include Farhad Amini, Flavia Chan, Alyx Essers, Honeytta Eyvany, Cas Fernandez, Jeremy Henrickson, Kristina Kolosova, Sonia Mocnik, Brianna Nilsson and Juan Vargo.
All of the artists are lined up to take part in the arts council’s paint off event, an art battle that pits artist against artist in a head-to-head live art competition.
An arts council press release notes that Vancouver has seen a plethora of new live painting events pop up in recent years – Art Battle, Golden Brush’s Battle of the Brush, Vancouver Art Attack and others.
“They have all become a unique way for art lovers and creators to come together and get closer to the creative process,” the release notes. “Many people have never seen how paintings are created, and it is an exciting spectacle to get a glimpse of what the creative process looks like first hand.”
Audience voting determines the winners of the events, and the whole thing ends with a silent auction allowing audience members to bid on one-of-a-kind works of art.
The Burnaby Arts Council has lined up DeSerres, the art supply store, to provide paint for the artists.
Art battles will take place from 1 to 3 p.m., with bidding on the finished products closing at 4 p.m.
The DiverCity exhibition will continue until Saturday, Aug. 5. It includes a free artist demo and talk on July 15 (see below).
Deer Lake Gallery is at 6584 Deer Lake Ave. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Call 604-298-7322 or see www.burnabyartscouncil.org for more.
GET UP CLOSE WITH ART
DiverCity will include an artist demo and workshop on Saturday, July 15 at 2 p.m.
Jeremy Henrickson will lead the demonstration of a variety of mixed media methods, with both hands-on demo and an artist`s talk.
“Henrickson’s work awakens emotion and expression from the subject. By utilizing intense colours and vibrant passages, his pieces emphasize modernity, light and energy,” a press release says. “Acrylics, inks and found paper are layered throughout to reveal the inner life of a subject, while heavier opaques sheath surface to the forms. This combination is meant to model the harmony between the outer veneer and the inner life below.”
Henrickson’s demonstration is free. Drop in to the gallery at 6584 Deer Lake Ave.
