Burnaby cops nail driver with more passengers than seats, open booze

The Burnaby RCMP CounterAttack campaign is well underway this holiday season, with the big night – Dec. 31 – still to come.

But traffic enforcement officers are still finding people partying the wrong way.

On Friday, Burnaby RCMP set up roadblock looking for impaired drivers.

They caught one such driver, who has been taken off of the road.

But another driver was issued multiple tickets for having open liquor in the vehicle and “more occupants than there were seats,” according to a tweet by police.

Having that many people in a vehicle is a danger to other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists because it limits visibility and creates distractions for the driver, say police.

Based on a five-year average from 2013 to 2017, about 68 people are killed in impaired-driving crashes each year in the province, according to Burnaby RCMP.

From now, through the end of December, local drivers can expect to run into more CounterAttack roadblocks, where officers will use roadside sobriety tests and specially trained drug-recognition experts to enforce the federal Cannabis Act and B.C.’s Cannabis Control and Licensing Act.

Anyone who suspects a driver of being impaired should note the vehicle’s licence plate, description and direction of travel and call 911 immediately.
