Generation Z prioritize issues like sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion. In short, they want accountability in the workplace.

Fourteen B.C. organizations have made a list ranking Canada's top employers for young people in 2022.

Now in its 20th year, the annual Canada’s Top Employers for Young People editorial competition turned its eye to Generation Z, a demographic born between the later half of the 1990s and the early 2010s.

“Young people are asking questions like ‘Is this a job I can be passionate about?’ and ‘Does this organization reflect my values so that I feel a connection beyond just employment?’. The best employers are improving their organizational and workplace policies to reflect these emerging concerns,” said Kristina Leung, senior editor at Mediacorp Canada, which co-published its results Tuesday in a special magazine with The Globe and Mail.

The ranking is selected by the editorial team at Mediacorp Canada and highlights employers that capture the values Generation Z cares about, such as sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion. In short, they want accountability in the workplace, according to the report.

Winners were selected based on considerations like tuition assistance, co-op or work-study programs, as well as mentorship and training programs.

One thing employers did differently this year was to incorporate social impact into their work programs, said Mediacorp’s assistant editor Stephanie Leung.

“It could be project-based work, like brainstorming solutions to a social problem, or a co-op experience that benefits a nonprofit and has a positive impact on communities,” said Leung. “The younger generation notices if an employer's social impact statements are not backed up by action.”
