Coquitlam urges residents to make sure they have an emergency kit handy

The city is calling on residents to be ready in case of a disaster — all part of Emergency Preparedness Week
The city of Coquitlam is reminding residents to keep an emergency kit handy and to be prepared for a range of potential disasters.

If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it's the need to be prepared.

That's the message the city of Coquitlam is driving home in a renewed call to prepare for unforeseen emergencies during Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs until May 9.

The 26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness checklist has been made available on the city’s website, encouraging residents to accomplish a task a week to get ready for anything from an earthquake or wildland fire to a hazardous materials spill or extended power outage.

Staff encourage residents to follow three simple steps: know the risks, make a plan, and get an emergency kit.

“We encourage everyone to prepare a personal or family emergency plan,” the city said in a press release. “You and your family should know what to do if you are not together, as well as at home and be able to take care of your basic needs for at least 72 hours following a disaster.”

Emergency Preparedness Week is held in the first week of May and is coordinated with Public Safety Canada. For more information on how you can be ready for an emergency go to www.coquitlam.ca/emergprepared.
