Burnaby South MP and federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said the federal government should extend benefits for people left out of work due to COVID-19.

Singh said the federal Liberals want to cut help by $800 a month through the Budget Implementation Act (BIA, Bill C-30) without fixing a cut to the Canada Recovery Benefit set to take place in July that could impact two million Canadians.
“Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government is abandoning those workers and their families who are barely making ends meet now and will likely not be able to with the Liberals’ planned cut of $800 a month,” said Singh. “The Liberals are out of touch with struggling families who need this money to make ends meet. New Democrats are calling on the Liberals to reverse this decision and ensure people continue to receive their full CRB as long as lockdowns prevent them from going back to work.”
With the federal Liberals in a minority situation, the party needs other help in order to pass legislation. An election has long been rumoured for 2021.
