A new show chronicling the evolution of women’s roles in musical theatre is coming to the stage in February.
Fabulist Theatre is presenting Better Than This, running Feb. 28 to March 9 at the Havana Theatre in Vancouver – and a Burnaby talent is a driving force behind the musical. Damon Jang, a co-founder of the theatre company, is also choreographing the show.
“By celebrating iconic female characters from Eliza Doolittle (My Fair Lady) to Alison Bechdel (Fun Home), Better Than This examines why certain tropes persist and looks at changing the narrative around the female voice in musicals,” says a press release about the production.
The audience will enjoy songs from many of the most beloved musicals of the past century, including West Side Story, Chicago, Wicked and more.
It features a foursome of talented female performers: Brianna Clark, a 2019 OVATION! Award nominee for her performance in Fabulist Theatre’s Once On This Island; Kyrst Hogan, recently featured in Kitty Night Productions’ Johnny and June; Dionne Phillips, who recently appeared in the Broadway Chorus Christmas panto Bootie and the Beast; and Cathy Wilmot, recently seen in the Arts Club Theatre’s production of Mamma Mia.
It was conceived and written by Mary Littlejohn, who also directs the production.
The Havana Theatre is at 1212 Commercial Dr.
Tickets are $18 if bought by Jan. 31, $24 if purchased in advance, and $28 at the door. There’s a pay-what-you-choose preview on Feb. 28 ($5 to $20), and a half-price show on Tuesday, March 5. The Friday, March 8 performance features a post-show talkback in honour of International Women’s Day.
