A sea of people in flowered shirts, leis and traditional Polynesian, Fijian attire and enjoying local Fijian cuisine.

No, this isn't the South Pacific, it's what you might expect to see at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium on Saturday, July 15.

The annual Fiji Festival, established in 1999 to encourage communities to come together to celebrate Fijian culture, is returning to Burnaby.

The 2023 event will see the return of traditional Fijian ceremonies — including a yagona ceremony — and other entertainment honouring Fijian culture.

Some local dignitaries are also slated to take part in the festivities. Admission is free.

According to a news release, there will be a soccer tournament, a fashion show, live musical performances of folk songs, classical Indian songs and showcases of Polynesian, Melanesian, meke, Hawaiian, bhangra and other dancers.

The event is expected to attract thousands of people and will boast some delicious local food and entertainment.

2023 Fiji Festival is held in memory of late Vincent Prakash, producer and director of the Jai Fiji TV program, who had a passion for bringing communities together and celebrating a day in the Fijian way.
