A bail hearing for a man accused of beating several people with a baseball bat during an alleged robbery at a Vancouver Canadian Tire has been put over to May 2.

Daniel Brandon Samuel Valleau, 30, has been charged with robbery, assault, two counts of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and breach of a release order.

The Vancouver Police Department said Valleau was arrested and charged with multiple criminal offences April 16 following a violent assault on a retail worker at the retailer’s Marine Drive location.

Police said a man entered the store around 2:45 p.m. and attempted to steal several hundred dollars in merchandise, including a metal baseball bat.

“When a staff member attempted to stop him, the suspect allegedly struck the worker multiple times with the bat,” police said. “The suspect fled, but was chased by other staff members, who were also allegedly assaulted.”

Police said witnesses helped officers take the suspect into custody.

The worker sustained serious injuries to the head and face, which required medical attention. An ambulance took him to the hospital.

Valleau is also charged with assaulting another person with a weapon that day and a further count of assaulting a third person.

Court dockets show those charges come in addition to two other files currently before Vancouver Provincial Court.

The first is for three charges of assault and assault by choking involving one person Feb. 8, 9, and 21, and the second is for theft under $5,000, assault and breach of a release order in connection with April 6 incidents.

Valleau is also charged with breach of a release condition by allegedly possessing a weapon April 16.
