Big Sisters granted Burnaby resident Cali Mancia an award for her outstanding contributions while volunteering for the organization that pairs young girls with older female mentors.
Mancia has volunteered for seven years with Big Sisters and mentored a girl named Michelle.
The two still meet regularly, although the official mentorship period is over now that Michelle has turned 19 and graduated from the program.

KEEP IN TOUCH
A former Burnaby teacher, who just turned 85 on Nov. 24, is hoping to hear from her ex students.
Gayda Smith started teaching in Burnaby in 1969 and retired in 1993.
She taught at Alpha Secondary, Burnaby North Secondary and Mcpherson Park High School. She taught science, boys' cooking, women's studies and English as second language. Smith is hoping former students will get in touch and send her pictures.
"I'm still around," Smith says. "I'd like to hear from them."
Email her at gaydac [email protected].
