Family Ties: All aboard for fun at Burnaby Central Railway

All aboard! Yes, the season is upon us once again.
Burnaby Central Railway
Families enjoy a ride on the Burnaby Central Railway last season. The train at Confederation Park is open for the season again.

All aboard! Yes, the season is upon us once again.

Train enthusiasts of all ages can turn out at Confederation Park to enjoy rides on the Burnaby Central Railway, that perennially popular miniature railway that wends around the park with diesel, electric and, yes, steam locomotives.

There’s a concession on site, and the railway can arrange for birthday parties and other special events as well as just regular rides.

It’s an affordable day out for the family, with a ticket price of only $3.50 per ride (or 10 ride passes for $30). Kids under three are free.

The railway is at Confederation Park, 120 Willingdon Ave. (enter off Penzance Drive).

It’s open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and statutory holidays right through the spring and summer, until Thanksgiving Monday. Check out www.burnabyrailway.org or call 604-291-0922 for details.

LEGO CLUB

Calling everyone who loves LEGO! (Come to think of it, isn’t that everybody? I mean, who doesn’t like LEGO?)

The McGill branch of Burnaby Public Library is holding a LEGO Club session on Saturday, May 6 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Kids aged four and up are invited to drop in any time to play with the library’s extensive LEGO collection. Caregivers must accompany kids under age 10 – and, of course, mom and dad can stay to play with LEGO too.

It’s on a drop-in basis, and you don’t need to sign up. Just show up at the library at 4595 Albert St.

See www.bpl.bc.ca/events for details.

SUMMER CAMPS COMING

Well, it’s early yet – but for parents who are making summer plans, July isn’t really all that far away.

Good news for local parents: Burnaby Family Life is once again offering its summer camps, running Mondays to Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The camps are for school-age children, from those who will finish kindergarten in June this year up to 12 years old.

You can pay $210 for weekly camps, or $165 for four-day weeks. Email [email protected], call 604-419-6914 or visit www.burnabyfamilylife.org for more details.

STAYING FIT

Parents with young children know how hard it can be to make time for fitness when child-minding gets in the way.

Fortunately, the City of Burnaby’s recreation centres can help. Three city centres – Bonsor Recreation Complex, Edmonds Community Centre and Eileen Dailly Centre – offer on-site child-minding for parents who are taking part in classes or fitness activities on site, whether that’s a fitness class, racquet sports, a weight room or the pool. Care is offered on a first-come, first-served basis at a cost of $4.70 for one hour (maximum of two hours at a time), and $2.35 per hour for each additional sibling.

It’s play-based care for kids from newborn to five years old, and parents must remain in the building while the child is in care.

Bonsor is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Edmonds I open Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. Eileen Dailly is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Check out the city’s latest Leisure Guide for details or see www.burnaby.ca.
