Free kids' science event in Burnaby

Scientists at Simon Fraser University are hosting a day of free activities for families this Sunday.

Scientists at Simon Fraser University are hosting a day of free activities for families this Sunday. Kids can learn more about the chemical connection between bees, beetles, pheromones, pests, dyes, plants and climate change through a series of interactive displays. The activities take place in the north academic quadrangle at SFU's Burnaby campus, starting at 1 p.m. Some of the topics covered include the pheromones of mountain pine beetles, how bees communicate with scents and taste, and why the pine beetle infestation is spreading. There will also be demonstrations with live bees and a tour of SFU's chemistry department. The day wraps up with a lecture by biology professor Jeremy McNeil at 5 p.m. McNeil specializes in the reproductive strategies of insects that migrate in response to habitat change. Participants must register at http://i.sfu.ca/XwdryE.
