Canine care: Ginger the dog, famous for her appearance on Global TV’s adopt-a-pet segment in 2009, is sick and her family is looking to the public to help raise $15,000 to cover veterinarian expenses.

A pooch famous for a television appearance eight years ago is in need of the community’s help.

Ginger the dog made a name for herself after she was featured on Global TV’s adopt-a-pet segment in 2009.

Throughout the three-minute piece, Ginger jumped on host Randene Neill several times, licking her face with such vigour Neill was barely able to keep Ginger down. The segment was a hit and Ginger was adopted by Jenny Mah and her daughter.

Last month, Ginger became ill and was rushed to the veterinarian. She underwent tests, an MRI and spinal tap in hopes of finding out what’s wrong with the pup. (It’s believed Ginger is suffering from kidney disease, but this hasn’t been confirmed.) Ginger remains in critical care at Canada West Veterinary Specialist across the border in Vancouver.

Mah and her daughter are now trying to raise $15,000 to help cover vet bills. So far, more than $5,000 has been raised, but more is still needed.

“Please could you donate one dollar to help pay for her diagnostics and mounting medical bills,” Mah wrote on the GoFundMe page on Feb. 24. “She has been admitted again into the Critical Care unit at Canada West today at 2 a.m. where a team of doctors are trying to save her.”
