This Thursday and Friday, Nelson Elementary is celebrating a century of learning since the Burnaby school opened in 1912.
As part of the centennial celebrations, former students and staff gathered alongside the current school population last week to unearth a 20-year-old time capsule buried by former Nelson students in 1992. At left, former head teacher Doug Trounce and former student Danny Bevacqua were at the school to see what had been buried two decades earlier. The items included a T-shirt signed by students and staff and a cassette recording of a students' performance.
Current principal Dino Klarich said the most interesting item was a duo-tang full of notes penned by the kids in 1992.
"It was really good for rehashing memories from the school 20 years ago," Klarich said.
The school is considering creating another time capsule for students to open 25 years from now.
