UPDATE: This weekend's heavy rain means some of these outdoor events will likely be cancelled, so plan accordingly. Music in the Park will likely be cancelled, and the outdoor movie in Confederation Park has already been cancelled. The Ethiopian Festival is still on, and organizers are bringing in tents to keep people dry.

  1. It’s time for the annual Ethiopian Summer Festival. The opening ceremony is on Friday, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the CBC building, at 700 Hamilton St. and includes a keynote speech and an art show. Saturday’s events take place in Burnaby’s Wesburn Park, at 4781 Parkwood Ave., from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be music, dancing, a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, soccer and basketball games, a talent show and kids’ activities. The Ethiopian Community Association of B.C. puts on the yearly event. Admission is free.
  2. This weekend marks the end of Music in the Park, the summer series of free musical performances. On Sunday, Aug. 30, the Malaya Cooks, the Vancouver Ocarina Family and Michelle Kwan are set to perform in the plaza behind the Edmonds Community Centre at 7433 Edmonds St. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. Bring a blanket and a picnic and get cozy for an evening of outdoor entertainment. Thanks to Lindy and Jim McQueen of EPIC, the Edmonds residents’ association, for organizing a second year of free shows for the community.
  3. Dinner and movie? How about outdoors? Don’t miss Chevron’s movie in the park event on Sunday, Aug. 30. From 5 to 8 p.m., there will be family activities and displays. Food trucks and a concession will be selling food until 8 p.m. The film is Big Hero 6, an animated comedy, and it starts at 8:30 p.m. Bring a blanket and the whole family for a fun, free evening outdoors. The event is in the grass oval field at Confederation Park.
  4. Rescue a Boxer is hosting its annual fundraiser this Sunday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m. at the Firefighters Club, at 6515 Bonsor Ave. Tickets are $25 and include a buffet dinner. Proceeds go to the group, which helps find new homes for abandoned boxers. To buy tickets, go to www.rescueaboxer.com.
  5. This weekend is also your last chance to take part in the free food workshops at the Burnaby Village Museum. On Sunday, Aug. 30, Burnaby Food First is hosting the final session in the Homegrown Harvest workshop series. Sunday’s workshop is on winter container gardening, and it runs from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the meadow. (If it’s raining, which could very well be the case, the workshop will be in the Discovery Room.) The event is free, and there’s no need to preregister. The museum is at 6501 Deer Lake Ave.
