Arts Alive at Burnaby Art Gallery

The Burnaby Art Gallery is celebrating the work of local secondary school students. Arts Alive opens tonight (Thursday, April 19) at the gallery, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., and continues at the gallery until May 20.

Arts Alive opens tonight (Thursday, April 19) at the gallery, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., and continues at the gallery until May 20.

The exhibition includes a range of artworks from students across the Burnaby school district - with drawings, photographs, sculptures and paintings by students in grades 8 to 12.

Student artists come from Alpha, Burnaby Central, Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby North, Burnaby South, Byrne Creek, Cariboo Hill and Moscrop secondary schools.

Guided tours and workshops are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Call 604-297-4413 to book.

Visitors will also have a chance to check out the work created by 12 students who have been taking part in an artist apprenticeship at the gallery.

They have been developing an installation under the guidance of artist and educator Jay Johnson.

This year's project, titled Ecologies, features the work of the emerging artists in sculpture, photography, drawing and painting.

The students who have created the installation are Jake Llorente, Christina Pinch, Helena Tse, Danitza Garate, Grace Zhu, Luisa Francescutti, Claudia Sovernigo, Jennifer Williams, Akzhan Zhilkibayeva, Emma Wegner, Lily Shi and Tim Hua.

Burnaby Art Gallery is at 6344 Deer Lake Ave.

It's open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
