Lively City: Burnaby dancers off to world championships

A brother-sister duo from Burnaby is part of the Canadian contingent for the upcoming world dance championships in Germany.

A brother-sister duo from Burnaby is part of the Canadian contingent for the upcoming world dance championships in Germany.

Anthony Juo, 8, and his 12-year-old sister Eugenie, who study with Dance Collective, are heading off with Team Canada West to the International Dance Organization’s world show dance championships in Reisa, Germany from Nov. 20 to 25.

They’re among 50 of the best young dancers from Western Canada to join the team, which is led by head choreographer Danielle Gardner – a past finalist on So You Think You Can Dance and a former world champion dancer herself. The team dancers range in age from seven to 19, and they’re spending 11 weeks training as a group for the chance to represent the country.

Bonnie Dyer, Team Canada Dance national director, says Canada has been quite successful in all disciplines at the world championships, thanks to the high standard of training that local studios offer.

“It is also great to see the best of the best in Canada that come from various studios all working together with one goal, and that is to represent Canada,” she said in a press release.

FEEL THE FEVER

Cabaret performers are returning to the stage at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

Local audiences can catch a return of the Fever Cabaret on Friday, Nov. 3, featuring the talents of Melanie Yeats and Joel DeStefano in an original cabaret written by Cory Philley.

“Melanie and I have played with cabaret before and loved the idea of using the irreverence of this kind of theatrical experience to explore some of our most confounding personal obsessions,” Philley said in a press release. “Together, Joel and Melanie’s soulful, captivating performances invite the audience to take pleasure in peeking into the dirty secrets that consume us.”

It’s onstage at 8 p.m. and costs $18. Buy tickets through tickets.shadboltcentre.com.

WONDERING

NOTE: This item was updated Oct. 17 to reflect new show dates.

Art lovers, save the date: Deer Lake Art Gallery is presenting a new show, Worlds of Wonder, from Nov. 4 to Dec. 9.

The show includes metal sculpture and digital art, featuring the work of Nancie Green and Lynne Taylor Fahnestalk.

Fahnestalk is a professional illustrator and cartoonist whose cartooning background paved the way for her robot obsession. Now she makes robot sculptures from upcycled metal objects – held together only by nuts, bolts, screws and washers, with no welding or gluing involved.

Green is an artist who uses photography and computer manipulation of photos to create robots and otherworldly imagery.

“The artist and the technician merge to go beyond the boundaries of the real and take us to a place where dreams materialize into artwork,” says a press release.

An opening reception is on Saturday, Nov. 4 at noon, and there will be an artist demo and talk that same day at 1 and 2 p.m. Deer Lake Gallery is at 6584 Deer Lake Ave. Call 604-298-7322 or see www.burnabyartscouncil.org.
