The B.C. Day weekend is behind us, which can only mean summer is waning.
But never fear, the City of Burnaby has a bunch of offerings in August to help you make the most of your time outdoors.
The city’s movie nights are returning to Civic Square on Thursdays in August, with shows at 8:30 p.m. in the square outside the Burnaby Public Library’s Metrotown branch.
This week, (Thursday, Aug. 8), it’s Mary Poppins Returns, followed by Hotel Transylvania 3 on Aug. 15 and Madagascar 3 on Aug. 22. The series winds up on Aug. 29 with one of the all-time classics of cinema history, The Wizard of Oz.
All movies run rain or shine, so dress for the weather and bring along your lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy an evening screening.
Families can also enjoy a couple of other community outdoor movie nights.
On Wednesday, Aug. 14, Willingdon Community Centre plays host to the annual Willingdon Community Fair from 5 to 8 p.m., with carnival games, barbecue, entertainment and more from 5 to 8 p.m. The fun winds up with a movie night – a screening of A Bug’s Life – rain or shine, starting at 8 p.m.
The following week, on Aug. 21, families can turn out to Charles Rummel Park (3630 Lozells Ave.) for a screening of Paddington 2 starting at 8 p.m. It runs rain or shine.
For those looking for something a little more active, the city is also hosting a series of family game nights in city parks – featuring giant lawn games including Connect 4, Jenga, chess, checkers, bowling and more.
On Thursday, Aug. 8, the fun is outside Confederation Community Centre at 4585 Albert St., from 5:30 to 8 p.m. On Wednesday, Aug. 14, it’s outside Willingdon Community Centre (1491 Carleton Ave.) from 5 to 8 p.m. On Wednesday, Aug. 21, the fun moves to the Charles Rummel Centre (3630 Lozells Ave.) from 5 to 8 p.m. It winds up on Thursday, Aug. 22 at Confederation Community Centre, 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Games nights are weather-dependent, so call 604-570-4000 to check for updates if the weather is iffy.
