Colour reigns supreme in Barry Walker’s art.
Walker’s portraits, landscapes and seascapes illuminate the walls of his daughter’s house.
His daughter is hosting an in-home art show and sale for her father’s art in her Burnaby home this weekend.
When you see a painting by Walker, the large swathes of colour immediately stand out.
“I do a lot of yellow skies and green skies … I’ve done bright orange skies, and nobody has ever said to me ‘Skies aren’t orange! Skies aren’t green!’” Walker said.
“If the colour is balanced in the painting, if it’s balanced everywhere your eye doesn’t see it.”
Currently a resident of Maple Ridge, Walker’s understanding of colour comes from his long career as a lithographic dot etcher, one who corrected colour in print advertisements.
Walker, 86, who has been painting portraits since he was 10 years old in Sydney, Australia, said a good painting is only half the story.
“People want … a good painting, but they want to look at something and be a little bit happy.”
His daughter is hosting the art show as she wanted to showcase her dad’s art.
“Pretty much all he does is he paints and paints and paints,” she said.
“And now the end result is that I'm turning my home, and my yard, essentially into a gallery because he has so many works, every time I turn around, he’s got another painting finished.”
