Two Metro Vancouver pipe bands with Tri-City musicians are back home after whirlwind trips to Scotland this month.
On Aug. 17, the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band (SFUPB) — led by Coquitlam drummer J. Reid Maxwell and Pipe Major Alan Bevan — clinched third place overall at the World Championship on the Glasgow Green, finishing with strong results the day before in their top Grade 1 class.
Inveraray and District Pipe Band was crowned the winners for the third time while Field Marshal Montgomery took second place overall.
Earlier that week, Bevan also won the masters solo competition at Piping Live! 2024, scoring the best overall marks and giving him a spot in the Glenfiddich Piping Championship in October, as well as an invite to the Sun Belt Invitational Competition in Florida.
Also, last week at the Argyllshire Gathering Piping Competition, SFUPB’s Zephan Knichel of Port Coquitlam, along with Bevan, Cameron Bonar and Callum Bevan won awards.
Greighland results
Meanwhile, Greighland Crossing, a Grade 3A pipe band based in Vancouver, earned sixth position overall at the Worlds on Aug. 17 and the 3A title for the World Champion Drum Corps.
Led by Pipe Major Jeff Rowell, the ensemble is made up of Tri-City musicians:

- Malcolm Fuller (Coquitlam)
- Shaunna Hilder (Port Coquitlam)
- Andrena Hilder (Port Coquitlam)
- Bill Meston (Port Coquitlam)
- Jaun Paul (Port Coquitlam)
The 29-member band spent two weeks in Glasgow to prepare for the main event under instructor Shaunna Hilder, the former pipe sergeant of the now-defunct Grade 1 Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band.
The group was also in Perth, Scotland, to make its début at the 2024 European Pipe Band Championship on Aug. 11, where it placed fifth among other 3A bands.
