You’ll know him best as the lead singer for Barenaked Ladies – and now he’s coming to headline the City of Burnaby’s Canada Day celebrations.
Steven Page will appear at Swangard Stadium on July 1 as part of the city’s fourth annual concert and fireworks event. This year marks Canada’s 150th birthday, and the city is planning to go all out with this year’s bash – with high-level entertainment, activities and exhibits for the family, plus a big fireworks finale.
“We are so pleased to offer this unique opportunity for Burnaby families to gather with friends and neighbours to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in grand fashion,” said Mayor Derek Corrigan in a press release. “We know that this will be an exceptional evening of entertainment and celebration. I look forward to seeing you there.”
Page will headline the stage lineup. Joining him will be the Vancouver party band Side One, the African heritage ensemble Kokoma and the Juno-nominated CBC Kids star Will Stroet.
Page is now pursuing a solo career after 20 years as the lead singer and songwriter for Barenaked Ladies – the Toronto-based band formed in 1988 that went on to worldwide success, selling 15 million albums and releasing a string of popular hits that included If I Had A Million Dollars, Brian Wilson and It’s All Been Done. Page left the band in 2008 to pursue a solo and theatrical career and, in 2010, released his first solo album, Page One.
He has also composed music for various Shakespeare productions at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and hosted his own radio documentary series, All the Rage, on CBC Radio One.
His show at Swangard Stadium will be free. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with the fireworks show slated for dusk.
