A Burnaby author is in the spotlight at the upcoming Cherie Smith JCC Jewish Book Festival in Vancouver.
The 34th annual festival takes place Feb. 9 through 14 at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver and other Lower Mainland venues. It features readings, panel discussions, a book club event and two onsite bookstores – running the gamut of styles and subject matter for both children and adults.
Among the authors featured this year is Burnaby’s Ellen Schwartz, who’ll be presenting from her new children’s book The Princess Dolls. The book is a story about friendship, set against the backdrop of 1942 Vancouver, where the faraway war in Europe casts shadows on the lives of two best friends, Esther and Michiko.
Schwartz is scheduled for a public outreach presentation at Richmond Public Library on Sunday, Feb. 10 from 11 a.m. to noon. She’ll also be offering a school talk at Vancouver Talmud Torah on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m.
The festival’s opening night gala features Joshua Cohen, in conversation about his novel Moving Kings and his first non-fiction collection ATTENTION: Dispatches From a Land of Distraction.
