I was chatting the other day with a woman of Persian descent who lamented that it was so hard to find good Persian food in Burnaby.
She said she had to drive all the way to North Vancouver, a major hub for Persian restaurants.
Well, there’s good news as North Burnaby is getting its next great restaurant that focuses on Persian food like yummy kababs.
Suren has now opened its doors at 4624 Hastings St. in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood. Suren’s owners have taken over an iconic restaurant space that has hosted eateries for decades, including Cristos and later Zeus Greek restaurants.
Suren has just opened its doors and doesn’t even have a website yet, although you can order food on Uber Eats and other platforms.
Suren has a delightful eggplant dip and a dish of fava beans, rice and a lamb shank that has been slow-roasted until it falls off the bone. Seriously, Persian food is incredible and now you don’t have to go to North Vancouver for it.
Burnaby does have a different option with Cazba Persian Grill, but you have to eat there during mall hours at Lougheed Town Centre and the Amazing Brentwood.
It’s in the food court and it’s pretty good. For me, Persian food is all about that fragrant saffron rice, following by the grilled meats made with fresh herbs. Going to a food court and getting something that isn’t fast food is a welcome addition.
Burnaby Heights just keeps getting better and better when it comes to representing different cultures, from Turkish to Vietnamese to Greek to Italian to Afghan.
