Life has come full circle for Cory Siegner.
Burnaby born and raised, Siegner was a staple on the local sports scene before getting into the family business of fishing before opening his own fish market in 2003 with some partners in Nelson, B.C., of all places, as Fisherman’s Market.
The company now has six markets across the province and one of them is now in his hometown of Burnaby as it took over the iconic Regent Fish store that stood there for decades with its distinctive neon sign.
Siegner knew Regent well.
“I remember selling fish to the old owner when I was just a kid in the fishing industry,” he said.
The store on Hastings Street in Burnaby Heights has been rebranded as Fisherman’s Market with a full renovation.
“We even had the old neon sign replaced to shine in the night like days of old,” he said. “The shop itself is a throwback build-out to the B.C. fishing industry and looks amazing. It is really exciting especially when a lot of friends and family still live around the neighbourhood.”
Other locations are in Kelowna, Kamloops, Gibsons, Nelson and West Vancouver, selling Everything from spot prawns to halibut.
“Our markets offer an array of fresh and frozen, boat direct, wild West Coast seafood and one of our main staples are our crew packs. A customer box of individually portioned and vacuum-sealed seafood”
The Fisherman’s Market has opened in time to celebrate B.C. commercial fishing week, Feb. 21 to 27.
“This event is to shed a light on the story that comes with the seafood you put on your table,” Siegner said. “We offer some amazing sales on products direct from fishermen and fishing companies. We tell their stories on our blog and represent their products in our markets. It’s our second annual and gaining traction as more and more companies and fisherman want to partake. We are hoping to get it to spot prawn festival status in the future. It’s just about paying homage and giving back to the community that raised us.”
