Tuesday, February 4

Pension and tax options: involuntary separation, caregiver and disability tax rules. This workshop describes the potential pension benefits that may occur if a couple enters involuntary separation. The workshop also deals with the rules that govern tax allowances for caregivers and disabled people. The procedures and forms to use to apply for these allowances are reviewed. ICBC and personal injury claims, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Bob Prittie Metrotown branch, 6100 Willingdon Ave. Have you had an automobile accident that requires a claim for personal injury or damages? This workshop, provided by a lawyer experienced in personal injury law, will take you through the following steps in an ICBC claim: determining fault and knowing time requirements for making a claim; ICBC no-fault benefits including workers compensation claims, total temporary disability benefits and other medical benefits; assessment of your claim and how to put together your claim for general and special damages; claiming legal costs; trial versus settlement and appeals. Brain gym energizer, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Confederation Seniors Centre, 4585 Albert St. Lori Wall will demonstrate and lead you through specialized, movement-based activities that have been proven to release stress and improve memory. Learn to wake up your senses for better hearing and vision while improving your balance and co-ordination.  Minimum registration required or this session will be cancelled. $4.75 for members and $5.95 for non-members, plus tax. Essential skills for workplace success, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Bob Prittie Metrotown branch, 6100 Willingdon Ave. Literacy and essential skills provide the foundation of all learning. Burnaby Public Library in partnership with Douglas College training group, is presenting a first-time, free, hands-on workshop exploring essential skills used in the workplace. This is a unique opportunity to familiarize yourself with essential skills in the workforce, the importance of which has been identified by the Canadian government. Registration is required. Revolution - A Documentary Film by Rob Stewart, 7 to 9 p.m., McGill branch, Burnaby Public Library, 4595 Albert St. Will all the world's seafood be gone by 2048? For four years, Canadian filmmaker Stewart traveled through 15 countries to show the grave dangers the world's oceans face from pollution and species loss, and the dedicated people working to save them in a global race against time. The result is Revolution, a visually-stunning and award-winning environmental conservation documentary. Immediately after the screening, a speaker from Vancouver Aquarium's Ocean Wise conservation program will give a short presentation and answer questions. Free but space is limited. Annual Treasure Hunt flea market and Japanese book sale, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The popular community event is held every year at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre, 6688 Southoaks Cresc., as a way for community members to find high quality second hand items, often including unique and rare Japanese items, at bargain prices. Treasure Hunt Market will also include a Japanese book sale. There will be live entertainment, delicious Japanese foods and snacks, a kids' fun zone and more.

Burnaby Parkinson's support group meets at Confederation Seniors' Centre, at 4585 Albert St., from 1 to 3:15 p.m. $2 admission to help cover refreshments and expenses. People who have or suspect they have Parkinson's, or caregivers, are welcome to attend. Undefeated, a documentary about people with Parkinson's, will screen at the meeting. Info: Call 604-298-2983.

The patient - doctor relationship: Making the most out of each visit with your family doctor, Bob Prittie Metrotown branch, 6100 Willingdon Ave. From 1:30 to 3 p.m. Popular Burnaby NOW columnist, Dr. Davidicus Wong, provides tips on the patient-doctor relationship. This event is co-sponsored by the Burnaby Division of Family Practice. The workshop is free but registration is required. Salsa Speakers Toastmasters, open house.
