Drivers who thought they’d save time by not brushing all the snow off their vehicles Monday morning were in for an unpleasant surprise near the Burnaby-Coquitlam border.
After Sunday’s snow storm, Mounties set up near Como Lake Avenue and Clarke Road waiting for the inevitable parade of drivers who hadn’t taken the time to thoroughly clean the white stuff from their cars and trucks.
“We were looking for any vehicles that were still covered in snow,” traffic unit Const. Kevin Connolly said.
In a two-hour span between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., he said officers pulled over about 50 vehicles.
After explaining the dangers of snow obscuring headlights, taillights and signal lights – not to mention snow obstructing the drivers’ vision or coming off in chunks to blind the drivers behind them – officers pitched in to help, according to Connolly.
“We then assisted them in clearing their vehicles,” he said. “We had extra brushes with us. One thing we found was the majority of the drivers we stopped didn’t have brushes. We handed them a brush, and together we would clear the car or truck.”
People who don’t properly clear the snow from their vehicles could face tickets, according to Connolly, but most drivers pulled over Monday morning got off with a warning.
With more snow in the forecast this week, he urged local drivers to take time to brush off their vehicles while they’re warming up.
