Every time I get sad about the trolls who spread garbage about COVID-19, I remember that Burnaby is still full of amazing people.
People like Betty, who contacted me after I interviewed a Burnaby senior upset that the only store in walking distance to her had been closed due to COVID-19.
The Greystone SuperValu was shut for 10 days starting on April 13 and one senior told me she no longer drives and she has to walk for her groceries. My mom lives in the area and fortunately drives, but says many others in the neighbourhood rely on the SuperValu for all of their groceries.
Betty saw this and stepped up.
“I just read today's article about the closing of the SuperValu in Greystone,” Betty wrote. While I know that you cannot give me the woman's contact information who now has no place to walk to get groceries, I was wondering if you would want to pass on my info to her. I would be happy to pick up groceries for her if she does not have anyone who can help her. I am a retired teacher, working part-time as a TOC, and shop for several people who can't get out. Please let me know if you think this would be helpful at all. I live about a five-minute drive from Greystone and do Costco, Walmart, Safeway, and Independent runs several times per week.”

We’ve seen so many amazing people step forward to help others during the pandemic. I choose to remember them when the news of the day gets me down.
