One man is in custody after coordinated raids at two Burnaby apartment buildings Tuesday morning.

Officers with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit and the emergency response team descended on two Metrotown apartments, one in the 6300 block of McKay Avenue and another in the 6400 block of Telford Avenue close by.

They came to execute search warrants in relation to an ongoing Lower Mainland drug investigation, according to CFSEU spokesperson Sgt. Brenda Winpenny.

Officers set off a distraction device – a loud bang – at the Telford apartment, and arrested a 27-year-old man at that location, she said.

“There’s a lot of planning that goes into these types of operations to ensure that any kind of risk to the public is mitigated,” Winpenny said.

This is the second time in just over two weeks that the anti-gang agency has drawn attention in the city.

On Nov. 17, a local woman was waiting in a car in the Brentwood mall parking lot just before 3 p.m., when a large number of CFSEU officers swooped in with loud bangs and smoke and cuffed a man who had been walking through the parking lot with a coffee.

Winpenny said that arrest had been made in connection with a different drug investigation.
