With more snow in the forecast, Burnaby parents are going to want to know whether local schools are open over the next few days.
All schools were closed Wednesday after a snowstorm began blanketing the Lower Mainland late Tuesday night, and the school district posted a refresher on its website on how to find out if schools are closed because of the weather.
Schools will stay open unless there is a "heavy snowfall, damage, or other circumstances – such as a power outage," according to the website.
The district says it does its best to announce school closures by 6:30 a.m.
The announcement will usually be posted on both the district's website and on its X/Twitter account.
Parents (and kids) can also find out about school closures through local news outlets, including the Burnaby NOW.
The district does not usually send out a notice if schools are open.
If weather worsens during the day (the forecast calls for more snow starting Thursday afternoon) the district may dismiss students early.
"This will be communicated to parents in the best way possible through the schools' normal communications channels," states the district website.
Even if schools are open, parents who feel their child can't travel safely are encouraged to notify the school if they decide to keep them home.
If the district decides to cancel evening classes because of the weather, that announcement will be made midday and posted on the Burnaby Community & Continuing Education website.
