Fans of reasonably priced Japanese wares have until Dec. 24 to shop at the Lougheed Oomomo Japan Living store – but shelves are emptying fast.
Everything at the self-described "Japanese variety store" at the City of Lougheed mall is being sold at 50 per cent off.
The company has not responded to a request for information from the Burnaby NOW, but an employee at the store confirmed the store was closing and said the last business day will be Christmas Eve.
Signs at the store are calling the sale a "lease expiry promotion."
The store saw a steady stream of customers Wednesday perusing items on the rapidly emptying shelves.
"It's pretty sad that it's closing down," shopper Elizabeth Hartley said. "I'm surprised, actually. We were just here three weeks ago and it was all good."
Hartley, who has shopped at the store before, described it as "cheap" but "more unique" than other dollar stores.
Sherran P., who didn't want her last name published, had never shopped at the store before but said she bought a number of useful items for just $10.
"It really matters these days when prices are so high," she said.
Catherine Choi, who lives in the neighbourhood, was at the store with her one-year-old twins, hoping to find a good deal on a couple of phone cases ("They're quite cheap here.") but they were already sold out.
She settled for a pair of gloves for her three-year-old at home.
"It's a really good store," she said.
Oomomo, a retail brand owned by Vancouver-based Fairchild Group, has two stores in Burnaby. The Metrotown store remains open.
