A Burnaby Mountie was sent to hospital after an early morning fire on Wednesday.
Around 2 a.m. on Aug. 21, officers received a call about some yelling and screaming coming from an apartment building in the 5900-block of Wilson Avenue.
"It was loud noises coming from that area, and we're not sure if it came from the apartment, the hallway, whatever, but we were called in," Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt. Maj. John Buis told the NOW.
When officers arrived on scene, there were flames coming from the bedroom of one of the apartments, he added.
An officer entered the unit, where they found a man inside. Both the man and the officer were later taken to Royal Columbian Hospital for signs of smoke inhalation.
Buis said whether the officer who entered the unit did so to rescue the man inside is still unclear.
Police are still investigating the incident, but they do believe someone left the scene shortly before officers arrived.
It is still unknown what role the man at the scene played in the disturbance call and fire.
"We don't know whether he was a victim or if he was a suspect," Buis added.
Both the officer and the man found in the unit have since been released from hospital.
