Burnaby residents interested in some candid conversations around death and grief are invited to get together at a local bakery over coffee and cake at a Death Café.

On Saturday, June 24, the small bakery café inside Brentwood mall will turn host the event for an hour.

Death Café has been around for a while now around the world — giving strangers an opportunity to get together in a relaxed atmosphere and discuss the complex, painful topic that is death.

The Death Café concept was first developed in the U.K. by the late Jon Underwood in 2011 in an effort to bring more people together to openly discuss their experiences around death and grief. The idea has since gone global, with more than 16,209 Death Cafes hosted in 85 countries.

After Underwood's death, his mother, Sue Barsky Reid, ran the first Death Café in the U.S. (based on the ideas of Bernard Crettaz).
