They’ve done it again.
A Burnaby city councillor and the city’s mayor have banded together once again to put out a song, this time speaking out against hate in the community. The song is titled You Won’t Stand Alone.
Coun. Joe Keithley, a founding member of legendary punk band D.O.A. who is also known by his stage name Joey Shithead, had also paired up with Mayor Mike Hurley earlier this year to put out a song to rally the community in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This song was released on Tuesday, Aug. 4, and it features Keithley on lead vocals and guitar, while Hurley takes on backup vocals and bass. Unlike the previous song, this one also includes a drummer, Paddy Duddy – another familiar face for D.O.A. fans.
“When you face the storm / You won’t stand alone / We’ll all stand together / ‘Cause this is our home / And it don’t matter / What colour you are / ‘Cause love will conquer hate / So you won’t stand alone,” sing Keithley and Hurley in the song’s chorus.
In a news release, Keithley said the city “know(s) that diversity is our strength.”
“More than half of our residents were born outside of Canada. But when you come here, we are part of the same human family, the same community. That’s what You Won't Stand Alone is about,” he said.
The video, posted on YouTube and other social media, features shots of Deer Lake and Burnaby Lake parks, and Burnaby City Hall.
“We’re lucky to live in one of the most diverse communities in Canada,” said Hurley. “You Won't Stand Alone is a celebration of our multicultural community and the way we look out for one another.”
The previous song, called We’re All In This Together, reached more than 30,000 views on various social media, according to the city.
