Residents of a Burnaby condo got a rude awakening early Monday morning, Oct. 16, when fire broke out on their 31st-floor balcony.

Fire crews were called to Concord Brentwood Hillside West at 4730 Lougheed Hwy. at 12:55 a.m., according to Burnaby fire Captain William Dinsmore.

He said firefighters spotted "visible fire" on an upper floor on the left side of the building.

Firefighters entered the building and located the fire on the balcony of an apartment on the 31st floor, according to Dinsmore.

He said they put out the flames with a handheld dry-chemical extinguisher.

Dinsmore said the cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but it may have been a barbecue.

Multiple comments on Reddit reported an explosion or loud popping sound, but Dinsmore said he hadn't heard anything about that.

Burnaby RCMP was called to the scene at about 1:10 a.m. help with traffic, according to spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

"Thank goodness they woke up," Kalanj said of the resident.
