Burnaby firefighters respond to a house fire on McGregor Avenue Tuesday night.

A two-alarm house fire in South Burnaby ended up being less serious than expected Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the 7900 block of McGregor Avenue at 11:31 p.m. for reports of flames showing and five people trapped inside a bathroom, according to assistant fire Chief Darcy Robinson.

When crews arrived, however, they found only smoke coming from a garage attached to the house, and the second alarm was cancelled before it even arrived.

“It ended up being a small fire in a garage,” Robinson said.

Contents inside the garage had caught fire, but the flames did not spread to the house.

“It’s not quite what the crew was expecting when they arrived, so that was really good news,” Robinson said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
