They're the unsung heroes who help direct traffic and provide support to the police during big events and now there are another 27 auxiliary constables in the city.

On Sunday, the Burnaby RCMP and the city hosted a graduation ceremony at Bonsor Recreation Center to honour the 27 newest members of the volunteer auxiliary constable program. The new auxiliary constables were sworn in as peace officers.

"The auxiliary constables are an important part of the Burnaby RCMP team," said Chief Supt. Dave Critchley. "They provide a wide range of duties in the main detachment and out in the community, such as support at community events and sporting events and they assist with crime prevention programs. These are the ultimate volunteers who selflessly give back to their community and contribute to making the city a safe and great place to work, live and play."

The new graduates mean the city now has 83 auxiliary constables. People interested in learning more about or joining the program can contact Cpl. Gary Law at 604-294-7983.
