Just five days after a devastating COVID-19 outbreak at Burnaby Hospital was declared over a new one has been announced.

Fraser Health has declared a new outbreak at Burnaby Hospital after evidence of transmission in a medicine unit.

Three patients have tested positive for COVID-19. The outbreak is limited to the medicine unit, which is temporarily closed to admissions, said a news release, adding that the hospital, including the Emergency Department, remains fully operational.

During the last outbreak, which started on Nov. 9, at least 10 people died and more than 100 cases, with 60 patients and 43 staff testing positive.

“Fraser Health continues to implement precautions, including enhanced cleaning, as well as contact tracing to protect the health of all staff, medical staff, and patients,” said a news release.

“Fraser Health has notified all patients on the affected unit about the outbreak and, in addition, has informed the families of patients who are unable to share this information. Burnaby Hospital is working with essential visitors to the affected unit on a case-by-case basis.”
