North Burnaby skaters can rejoice as Kensington Arena is back in action after it closed last July due to a failed concrete slab.

Mayor Mike Hurley said the facility is in "great condition" and congratulated the contractors and staff.

"It's operating, and it's in really great shape," Hurley said at a committee meeting Thursday.

Drop-in programs will resume next week.

When the arena closed last year for "unexpected and significant failure issues," council approved a total contract of more than $2.95 million for the repairs.

The Kensington Park ice rink was built in 1973.
