After contributing to multiple Burnaby healthcare initiatives, William McCarthy is being recognized with one of the highest recognitions in B.C.

The province announced McCarthy is one of 12 people appointed to the Order of British Columbia during its 35-year anniversary.

In a news release today, Aug. 5, the province says McCarthy was selected for his historic and transformative support of health care and community. He was also named of B.C.'s "most impactful" philanthropists.

"William’s historic $21.4-million Jambor-McCarthy Legacy, at the time the largest single-beneficiary bequest in B.C.’s history, alongside his personal donations and advocacy, have profoundly advanced cancer research and patient care throughout the entire province," the release added.

"William’s unwavering commitment to giving back has improved countless lives, making B.C. a better place for generations to come."

In April, it was revealed that William and his son John had made a $5-million donation towards Burnaby's future BC Cancer Centre.

The BC Cancer Foundation announced the facility will be named the Burnaby McCarthy Centre.

It's the first such honour for a donor.

McCarthy also chaired the $60-million campaign in support of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment.

"Burnaby is our home and we’re proud to give back – always," he said after the announcement of the $5-million donation.

As of April 2024, the family has funded more than $30 million in cancer research, education and healthcare in B.C.

“This year’s recipients are impressive, not simply because of their outstanding contributions to their communities but also because of the diversity of their achievements," B.C. Lieutenant Governor and chancellor of the Order of British Columbia Janet Austin said in a statement.

"The recipients have made advances in sustainability, reconciliation, health care, technology, arts and business. I am amazed by their dedication and innovation, and I look forward to celebrating their installation into the Order at Government House."

A special investiture ceremony for invited guests will happen at Government House in Victoria on Sept. 4, 2024, bringing the total membership to 515.

“On behalf of the people of British Columbia, congratulations to those being appointed to the Order of B.C. for 2024," Premier David Eby said.

"You’ve made it your life’s work – through your leadership, art and generosity – to make life better for British Columbians. You represent the best of the best in our province and serve as an example to us all. Thanks for all that you’ve done and all that you will go on to do.”
