Burnaby RCMP found and intercepted a distraught man who had told them he planned to jump from a highway overpass onto the Trans-Canada Highway Thursday night, according to a press release.
The RCMP searched several highway overpasses to locate the man and narrowed down the search through the use of cell towers.
The man was kept on the phone in an attempt to calm him down and keep him on the line while the police scoured the area, the release stated.
A police constable spotted the man on the older decommissioned overpass and ran along the Kensington overpass on foot to reach him.
"As the constable closed in to speak with the male he appeared to prepare himself to jump," stated Cpl. Rick Skolrood in the release. "The constable reacted quickly, grabbing the male in a bear hug and pulling him to safety over the guard rail."
The man is now recovering in hospital.
According to the release, the constable and call taker will be recognized for their actions and service under extreme pressure, "which resulted in the preservation of human life."
