A group of Burnaby residents say they don’t want a sidewalk built on their street and they’ve all signed a petition in an effort to block it.
Residents in the 4200 block of McGill Street in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood have submitted the petition to the City of Burnaby.
The petition says the residents, who live across the street from McGill Park, object to construction of the sidewalk on the “south side” of the street because it’s “redundant” as there is a sidewalk being built already on the north side of the street where the park is.
“We believe that a sidewalk on the north side, where the park is, is perfectly adequate,” says the petition, adding that the sidewalk would result in the loss of a “significant amount of planted vegetation.”
The petition also questions who will maintain the area after the construction is completed, with worries the area will become “overrun” with leaves and fallen branches.
