Most people celebrate their cultures new year by popping champagne and filling their faces with food.
For Burnaby’s M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi School of Islamic Sufism, they are celebrating International Nowruz Day by giving back to their local communities through charitable action.
Nowruz (“the new day”) is the Persian New Year celebrated by 300 million people across the world, said a news release.
“Falling on the first day of spring, or the spring equinox, it is a day of unity; a day of reflection and hope for the new year,” said the release. “To celebrate, this year, M.T.O. students have organized a global day of action across the Asia Pacific, Europe, and North America. The occasion will see the international Sufi community donating PPEs, clothing and school supplies to health-care workers, schools, and those in need during these trying times.”
On Thursday, students will also be donating 258 tote bags of non-perishable food items and PPE to local families in need through Burnaby Neighbourhood House.
