Burnaby residents were among those honoured at AgeCare's annual Seniors of Distinctions Awards gala on Oct. 1.

Two Burnaby seniors have been recognized for the impact they make in the community.

AgeCare, which operates more than 54 continuing care communities in B.C., Ontario and Alberta, held its yearly Seniors of Distinction Awards Gala on National Seniors Day on Tuesday, Oct. 1 in Burnaby.

Merv Magus received the Arts Award for his more than 40 years of cartoonist work.

Magus has contributed cartoons for numerous sports teams including the BC Lions, Vancouver Whitecaps and Vancouver Canucks.

Yashmin Kassam, meanwhile, received the Leadership Award for her dedication to her community and volunteering time with multiple organizations.

Kassam trains new volunteers at AgeCare Harmony Court Estate's General Store, started a welcome committee and continues to volunteer within the Ismaili community.

AgeCare says the awards recognize the extraordinary achievements of seniors who have made "lasting contributions" in the areas of healthy living, leadership, the arts and community service.

“We are here to honour the remarkable individuals who have not only dedicated their lives to bettering themselves, but have also enriched our community through their leadership, creativity, and commitment to service," AgeCare Vice President of BC Operations Khairun Jivani said at the gala, which was held at the Metrotown Banquet Hall.
