Burnaby teen named to Canada West team for World Junior A Challenge hockey tournament

Seventeen-year-old Brandon Morley of Burnaby earned a spot on the regional B.C./Alberta Canada West squad for the World Junior A Hockey Challenge that will get underway in Langley on Monday.

Morley is one of 12 players from B.C., and among seven Lower Mainland skaters, named to the 22-member squad. Former Northwest Giants major midget players, Alex Kerfoot and Curtis Loik, were also named to the representative team.

Canada West will take on Canada East in an exhibition match at the Langley Events Centre tomorrow (Thursday) at 7 p.m. The West squad will also play Team Russia on Saturday in friendly at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack.

The Challenge gets underway in earnest on Monday, Nov. 7 at the Langley Events Centre. Canada West opens its Group A schedule on Tuesday against Sweden at 7:30 p. m. The team's next group fixture is on Wednesday against the United States.

Following group play, the quarter-finals will take place on Thursday against the second- and third-place teams in a crossover matchup.

The semifinals are on Friday with the quarter-final winners taking on the respective group champs.

The gold-medal final will be held on Sunday, Nov. 13 at the events centre, beginning at 5 p.m.

The bronze medal contest and the battle for fifth place will be held on Saturday.

Morley, at 5-8, is one of the smaller forwards on the Canada West squad. He has three goals and seven assists in nine games to date with the Seattle Eagles of the B.C. Hockey League.
