Burnaby council voted unanimously to expropriate a half-acre of land to make way for the Holdom overpass.
There was no discussion at the council table at the meeting Sept. 9, after staff submitted a report recommending the plan to expropriate the industrial land.
The land on the eastern portion of a 2.2-acre property at 5595 Roy St., bordering Holdom Avenue, is owned by numbered company 1044451 B.C. Ltd.
The report said the land is “necessary” to build the overpass, which is set to begin construction later this year.
The city has already initiated the expropriation of the desired land by serving a notice to the owner and posting a sign on the land containing a summary of the notice.
The Holdom overpass is intended to improve trade flows in the region and increase safety for pedestrians, cyclists and emergency first responders at the "very, very busy" Douglas Road crossing, according to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, which runs the project.
