The City of Burnaby is issuing a call to all residents to help prevent flooding as the recent heavy snowfall starts to melt quickly.
With the snow having turned to rain, with more rain in the forecast, heavy deposits of snow are turning into water and potentially flooding on streets as catch basins get blocked by debris.
“You can help melting snow drain away by clearing catch basins and shoveling a narrow channel along the curb,” reads a city tweet, pointing to the photo posted above.
While snow may be staying off Metro Vancouver's forecast for a while, strong north to northwest winds are expected to blast across the Strait of Georgia today.
On Friday (Jan. 7), Environment Canada issued a warning for Metro Vancouver of an intense low-pressure system. Most of Metro Vancouver will see winds of 50 km/h gusting to 70. Areas closer to the coast will see stronger winds of 70 km/h gusting to 90. The strong winds will begin to ease through the afternoon.
As for precipitation, more rain is expected to help wash away the recent snowfall. Daytime temperatures are forecasted at 3 C while the mercury is expected to dip to -1 C in the evening.
On Saturday, periods of snow totalling 2 cm are predicted to change to turn into periods of rain near noon with winds of 20 km/h.
