Burnaby is home to the region's first Eco-Centre, which is opening up to the public for tours this Saturday.
The Eco-Centre features a demonstration rain garden and bio-swale that forms an entry court from Central Valley Greenway and Still Creek Drive.
"This is the region's first Eco-Centre," said Mayor Derek Corrigan in a media release. "As part of our commitment to sustainability, the city is aggressively pursuing recycling opportunities."
Corrigan said the new centre is critical in enabling residents and businesses divert green waste and recyclables from the waste stream, and helping achieve the region's 70 per cent waste reduction goal by 2015.
"We are determined to make it easy for every Burnaby citizen and business to reduce waste and to enjoy all of the associated benefits," he said. "This innovative, new addition to the city's suite of public services will help us all to enjoy a clean, healthy environment in our city, region and beyond."
The centre is located at 4855 Still Creek Avenue and the Sept. 7 event starts at 2 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Parking is limited, but the centre is located near the Central Valley Greenway. Interim access to the centre is through Regent Street, off Douglas Road.
