Around and around they go.
The Burnaby Velodrome Club is welcoming hundreds of indoor cyclists this weekend for the 2023 BC Provincial Track Championships.
It's the first time in two years the local bubble has hosted the three-day event, which will pin athletes ranging from under-17s to masters over 65 years against each other in pursuit of multiple gold medals.
Disciplines for licensed and registered riders also vary from individual and team sprints to endurance-based and points races around the 200 m wood strip and plywood track.
Spokesperson Hans Loeffelholz tells the NOW it's a very significant competition for the Burnaby Velodrome Club to host considering the community's dedication to preserving its facility.
"Track cycling is just one of many cycling disciplines and there are only a few indoor facilities in North America," he explained.
"Burnaby happens to be the home of the longest-running indoor velodrome in North America. So it is pretty special."
Cycling BC and the province were key contributors in Burnaby's ability to host this year's provincials, the velodrome club's website reads.
The BC Provincial Track Championships will run from today, Dec. 15, until Sunday, Dec. 17. The Burnaby Velodrome is located at 7564 Barnet Hwy.
